if I had to pick a favorite picture of Harriet, I would pick this one.
I know it’s Black History Month, but that’s not why I am posting this blog.
I live a Black History Life and a promoter of African Americans period….especially in missions.
This lady lived on mission with God.
I want to just highlight ONE ASPECT of her life that I admire.
And I want to parallel it with God in the Old Testament.
They called Harriet “Moses” as she helped deliver her people.
Much like Moses, in the Old Testament, God was preparing a people for their freedom. They had a new land to cross into.
Harriet carried a gun, that she would threaten slaves with, if they wanted to revert and go back when they were escaping.
I see this parallel in the Exodus journey where if someone broke the sabbath, they needed to be killed. Someone committed adultery, kill them. Someone worshipped other gods….kill them. There was a fierceness in God’s determination to get the slavery mindset out of His people and lead them to freedom.
Harriet knew if one slave wanted to go back to slavery while on the way to freedom, it could compromise the whole group. So she was willing to kill the very ones she came to deliver if it meant it would affect everyone. She was known to say “You’ll be free or die a slave.”
And I believe, if we read the Old Testament through THAT lens…that God was saying “Be free or die” and don’t affect My people I am trying to free, we would see the immense LOVE He had for our FREEDOM.
I’m blown away by this parallel.
It’s deep. I hope you are catching it.
